Canadian Government Wants to Remove Affirmative Job Action

July 22, 2010
The Tory government is now considering removal of the affirmative action plan currently used for government hiring. Affirmative action is supposed to give priority to qualified applicants of minority groups who apply for federal government positions. The Conservatives are calling for a review of such practices.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said in an interview ""To say that you cannot apply for a job in your government, which is funded by your tax dollars, because you're not from an approved racial or ethnic category, it just seems inappropriate on so many levels."

The Public Service Alliance of Canada, or PSAC, which is the union representing public workers says that the current policy does not favour minority groups. Their statistics show that of 5,000 federal job postings in 2008 only 91 jobs were designated for a particular group.
